January I took this course as a follow-on from A, as part of the Open degree and the Diploma in Literature and Creative Writing. The other writing technique we were advised to try was clustering, which involved writing your initial idea in the centre of the notebook page, and then writing ideas around it in a sort of free association exercise.
I am pleased that I took the course and it may yet pay for itself. I agree with many other posts from A students, that having to commit to developing the story of the first TMA is a bit of a struggle; perhaps this is the only thing I would change.
You will have the opportunity to put both the theory you will learn and your inspiration into practice! My subconscious mind has not been cavorting while I was asleep, but stumbling about weakly, worrying about the day job. I found that my writing took itself into surprising and interesting directions supported and encouraged by both tutor and an active tutor group.
I have loved every minute of it. I enjoyed this course, it took my writing into unexpected directions. However, some activities may have more specific requirements. There is very little so supportive, encouraging, and downright enthusiastic as a bunch of OU Creative Writing students.
I have gained technical knowledge and a lot more confidence particularly in short story writing. The general forum was, however, buzzing; once "critiquing buddies" are made you will have all the help you need.
Your skills as a writer are expanded and the titbits that you pick up as you go along from the tutor, the course books and the online forum are priceless. I have become a much more critical reader and viewer. You will need Audio-CD player.

What was it like? I received the course materials in late September – a set of CDs with interviews with writers, a big textbook – nicknamed the BRB (Big Red Book) by fellow students, a Workbook giving week by week instructions on which bits of the. This is a practical subject that introduces students to various approaches and ways of thinking about creative writing.
The subject consists of a series of workshops and lectures covering a range of creative writing skills and topics.
It’s October 1 st and the beginning of the Open University A Creative Writing Course. I’m excited and nervous at the same time. Excited because I can now stop panicking, it’s too late for panicking.
Nervous because I have met a few of my fellow students via Facebook and they are already proving what a talented bunch they are. In October I will be starting the A Creative Writing, with the Open University, after having finished the A Start Creative Writing and I think I will struggle to make my writing clear to the reader.
