Use 5 senses writing anchor

The students watch as I look at the photograph and name what I see. The students taste the food and write in words to describe the food. And have you unlocked what the sounds are really telling you? The purpose of this anchor chart is to support my students understanding of academic vocabulary.

Have students compare their experiences with that of other classmates. The purpose for partnership is two-fold. When you begin to describe a scene close your eyes and envision all of the possible smells that surround you.

Sand in a small bucket with water so students could feel the sand and ocean water Slightly salty water in small cups so students could taste the ocean water An ocean CD so students could hear the waves and birds at the ocean An ocean scented candle so students could smell the ocean A picture of an ocean scene so the students could see the ocean As you read the book aloud, share the sensory items with students as appropriate we chose not to show the students the pictures so that they could create their own mental image.

As I listen, I research a teaching point and then work to provide clarification through questioning, modeling and re-teaching. After students have shared, reread the book as they look at the pictures.

If your partner disagrees with you, I want you to listen carefully to why and then decide if you need to make some changes to your observation. Brainstorm words the students can use in their writing to describe each sense.

We use the five senses to transport our reader into the scene we are describing. The question of why you are seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, or feeling something. Some suggestions include apples sweet and sour varietiespotato chips, lemon slices and Fruit Loops. Students listen and create a picture in their mind as the story is read.

There are noises all around you. The number of adjectives available are endless. The key to a good observation is that it must be accurate and factual.

It must be exact, and to do this you must keep careful notes of your observations. On the weekends, she writes poetry and prose. Today you will share your observations with your workshop partner. Discuss how people create different images in their head. What do you not see?

Descriptive Writing and the Five Senses One of the key things that a passage of descriptive writing should do is appeal to all five of the senses.
